Patriots hired University of Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien, who brings valuable experience as a play caller, having previously served as the Patriots' offensive coordinator in 2011. He is expected to bring cohesion to the offense and aid in the development of quarterback Mac Jones.

Despite the focus on the passing game, the Patriots will also heavily rely on the running game. The departure of running back Damien Harris, who led the team in rushing in 2020 and 2021, creates an opportunity for other running backs on the roster. Let's take a closer look at the Patriots' remaining running backs and what we can expect from them in the upcoming 2023 season.

Rhamondre Stevenson

Rhamondre Stevenson had an impressive rookie season and continued to excel in his second year. He surpassed Damien Harris in terms of performance, rushing for 1,040 yards on 210 carries, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. Stevenson also proved his versatility as a receiver, with a significant increase in catches from 14 to 69 last season. In total, he accumulated 1,461 combined yards and scored six touchdowns.

Barring any new additions, Stevenson appears to be the clear number one running back for the Patriots.

Pierre Strong

Pierre Strong was selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the draft last year. Although he primarily contributed on special teams, his role increased towards the end of the season, earning him the third-highest snap count at the running back position. Strong has shown promising speed and potential in the passing game, accumulating 142 yards on 17 combined touches. While it is too early to draw conclusions, Strong is currently the frontrunner for the RB2 position.

Ty Montgomery

Ty Montgomery was originally drafted as a wide receiver by the Green Bay Packers but transitioned to the running back position. Unfortunately, injuries have plagued his career, including an ankle injury that limited him to only one game last season. If he can stay healthy, Montgomery has the potential to contribute in passing situations and fill a role similar to that of James White.

Kevin Harris

Kevin Harris was selected by the Patriots two rounds after Pierre Strong but did not make the 53-man roster initially. He joined the practice squad and earned a promotion in October. Despite limited playing time, Harris had notable involvement in Weeks 6 and 14. As a powerfully built back like Stevenson, Harris may face competition from Strong to secure the RB2 position.

Fantasy Football Outlook

Rhamondre Stevenson is highly likely to be the lead running back for the Patriots, with Ty Montgomery seeing playing time in passing situations. Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris will compete for the backup role and provide relief for Stevenson when needed. Stevenson is a strong RB2 option with the potential for a top-10 finish. Also keeping an eye on the clear RB2 winner from training camp could serve as a valuable late-round handcuff pick in fantasy football.
